Goal Setting
"People spend more time planning their vacation
than planning their life"

As you ponder this statement think about the goals we set have for yourselves and the goals you may have had but never got around to accomplishing. The challenge we all face with setting goals is that most of us were never taught how to accomplish our goals. This is why so many New Years resolutions are broken within a month and why losing weight or accomplishing something we really want to do may not happen for us.

I have laid out a format that may help you in understanding what it takes to be successful:

  • The Planning Phase – Take considerable time planning goals. Individual goals, Team Goals, Short Term Goals, Long Term Goals.
  • The Meeting Phase – Set dates and times to check on goal setting plans with those who are helping you with your goals such as family, coworkers, managers.
  • Follow Up/Evaluation Phase – Goal setting needs evaluative feedback. Schedule evaluation meetings throughout the process.
  • Journal Your Accomplishments!!!

I have also provided you with a few guidelines that may help you stay on course when setting your goals:

  • Set specific goals in measurable and behavioral terms
  • Set moderately difficult but realistic goals
  • Set short-range as well as long-range goals.
  • Set Process and Performance Goals as well as Outcome Goals
  • Set Positive Goals as Opposed to Negative Goals
  • Identify Target Dates for Attaining Goals
  • Identify Goal Achievement Strategies
  • Record Goals Once they have been identified
  • Provide for Goal Evaluation
  • Provide Support for Goals

When setting your goals you may want to avoid these common goal setting problems:

  • Setting too many goals too soon
  • Failing to Recognize Individual Differences
  • Setting Goals that are too general
  • Failing to modify unrealistic goals
  • Failing to set process and performance goals
  • Understanding the time commitment needed to implement a Goal Setting Program
  • Failing to create a supportive Goal Setting Atmosphere

While you make your goals consider this: "Its not the goal where satisfaction comes from, it the journey."

Craig 8/29/2010 11:28:00 PM Dale, Great stuff. I can say that I have definitely fallen victim to setting too many goals both long term and just for the day. Then I get paralyzed trying to prioritize them and end up not getting anything done. @cdstern
